Driving in Ireland

In May, my sister-in-law and I will be driving in Ireland. We have a nine day trip mapped out with a B&B or castle hotel awaiting us each night. I'd love to get some tips for driving on the "wrong" side of the highway as neither one of us has ever had the experience. I am a bit concerned.....

Hi Ellen,
A trip to Ireland! You'll love it. Yes, that left-side driving is a bit disorienting at first, but you get used to it quickly. Biggest challenges for me were turning corners (making sure I ended up in the correct lane), the traffic circles, and allowing for clearance in parking lots and other space-restricted areas. If you haven't made arrangements for a car, I'd recommend an automatic, as a manual transmission will be an additional challenge you don't need. Have a wonderful time!

I found that I was so used to looking right then left that it caused many near-misses. Just always take your time and get in the habit of looking both ways a couple of times. This also goes for crossing the street on foot!

Have fun!
